Prof. John McKinstry wants to share his knowledge and expertise in the area of Asian Studies with you again. This time we're going to India.

The Indian subcontinent has been a stage for sophisticated human communal life for as long as it has existed anywhere.

Long before anything resembling civilization appeared in Europe, even before the ancient precursors of the Incas or Mayans developed as civilized peoples, in what is now India and Pakistan there were large cities, a literate priesthood, a money economy, far reaching trade and most of the ingredients of complex urban development.

For four thousand years India culture was always there, sometimes powerful and expansive, at other times invaded and conquered from the outside. The mix of those outside traditions with the ancient core resulted in a diverse, intricate and unique panoply of human expression, much if it continuing today.

Most recently India, Pakistan and Bangladesh endeavor to form their own version of the modern world.

Its a lot to ponder in a short discussion over four hours in two weeks, but lets give it a try.

John McKinstry was Professor of sociology at Cal Poly 1968-2014. Recipient of three Fulbright Teaching awards to Japan, China and Bulgaria. Author and co-author of several books about Asian societies.
