Kung Fu for Derby
Back by popular demand, we are SO excited to announce that SDB parent and kung fu expert Hira Bluestone (mom of Div 2s Lucy Cannon) is willing to once again teach a customized kung fu class just for our derby skaters. This year, she is really taking it up a notch, and is offering a four-class session teaching martial arts specifically designed to support the skating community. Thats right! Focus will be on basic strikes, kicks, blocks and stances - with emphasis on how these skills can be applied to derby! - using forms, fighting and self-defense all in a supportive and fun environment.
Hira is a 2nd degree black belt in Kajukenbo/kung fu, a street fighting martial art with a strong female lineage, and has taught martial arts and self defense for over 15 years. She opened a kung fu school in Connecticut while living there, and she has been involved with the Fight the Fear campaign which offers free self-defense in the Seattle area. She believes that learning even one or two techniques can be helpful and even live saving - honestly, you can never learn too much self defense!!
Please note: at this point, these classes are designed for skaters ages 12-18.
Dates: Saturdays, January 13th, January 27th, February 17th and March 3rd Time: All 90-minute sessions will be from 12:00-1:30 pm Where: The Rats Nest What to Bring: A mouthguard (either your derby mouthguard, or a new one just for kung fu) and a positive attitude! Cost: $40 covers all four sessions - just enough to cover rental costs; this is not a money maker, just another opportunity for our skaters!
Class Size is Limited to 20 Skaters
