Broadway Jazz: from Jack Cole to Bob Fosse

Jack Cole, the Father of Modern Jazz Dance, was hugely influential creating the style of dance we associate most with Broadway, as is typified in the work of director/choreographer Bob Fosse. Actress/dancer Gwen Verdon was the direct link between the two men, and this lecture will discuss her working and personal relationships with both of them. Video clips will include examples of choreography by Cole and Fosse, with excerpts from Kismet, Damn Yankees, Sweet Charity, and performances by Cole, Verdon, Fosse and Chita Rivera.
Debra Dickinsons performing credits include Broadway and regional theaters; she appeared as Guinevere in Camelot opposite both Richard Burton and Richard Harris, and Jellylorum in the German language production of Cats in Vienna. Ms. Dickinson teaches the Opera Workshop classes at the Shepherd School, in addition to classes in the History of Musical Theater in the theater department and the School of Continuing Studies of Rice.
