Art Changes Everything :The Lens Through Which You View The World

In our first salon of the series, meet a living legend. Harold Feinstein's career has taken place on the leading edge of advancing photo technology from 1946 to the present, offering us jaw-dropping images of subjects as diverse as Coney Island beach goers to butterflies, flowers and seashells. In this presentation, Mr. Feinstein will focus on his images from Coney Island. This body of work is considered to be among the best in the New York Street Photography style, associated with such greats as Lee Friedlander, Diane Arbus, and W. Eugene Smith.

Harold Feinstein's career spans six decades. At age nineteen his work entered the permanent collection of The Museum of Modern Art in New York City. His eye takes us inside Coney Island, the Korean War and more recently up close and personal with flowers seashells and butterflies. He has been an inspirational and leading edge teacher in his field for fifty years. He will tell you he loves teaching photography as much as he loves being a photographer.

Feinstein quickly became a prominent figure in the vanguard of the early New York City photography scene where he exhibited at Helen Gee's Limelight Gallery, was a designer for historic Blue Note Records and was a member of the NY Photo League.

His loft studio at 821 Sixth Avenue in New York City became the famous Jazz Loft associated with W. Eugene Smith and his Jazz Loft Project, having been a place where jazz musicians hung out, composed and jammed beginning in the 1950's while Harold was still there. Those years and the musicians involved are profiled in a book by Sam Stephenson called The Jazz Loft Project.

Feinstein's photographs have been exhibited in and are represented in the permanent collections of major museums including the Museum of Modern Art, International Center of Photography, and the George Eastman House.

Mr.Feinstein and his wife, Judith Thompson, make their home in Merrimac Massachusetts.
