Jake Xerxes Fussell @ Recover Brands / Charlotte, NC

Jake Xerxes Fussell is a time traveler. Named for a potter who was named for the fourth king of the Achaemenid dynasty, his journey has taken him from Georgia to Berkeley to Oxford, Mississippi to Durham - with furloughs in myriad towns, hamlets, way stations and outposts along the way. As a child, he tagged along with his folklorist father, traversing the Deep South researching, recording and photographing old-time musicians of all shapes and sizes. He met a bunch of blues and folk pickers along the way and learned to play guitar.

He also met William Tyler. The kindred spirits played music together and recorded Jake's first album in 2015, a self-titled affair with Tyler in the producer's booth. It's a folk record for modern times. Earlier this year, he released What in the Natural World, his second full length. It's primarily a collection of traditional songs from the 1920s and 1930s, reinterpreted for the heads of today. Both records were released by Chapel Hill's fortress label Paradise of Bachelors. His name takes us back to the earliest of times, and the songs he's chosen to record reflect his passion for digging up musical gems that were forgotten long ago. But the way he plays them is utterly of today and for today.

Jake opened for Wilco several times earlier this year and is wrapping up a European tour with The Como Mamas. He's also a regular bandmate of Nathan Bowles.

Jake Xerxes Fussell brings his one-of-a-kind show to Charlotte on Thursday, December 14th. It will be the final living room set of the year at Recover Brands.
