ASME STS - Thursday, January 18th, 2018 - "Innovative Power Generation from Ocean/Sea Waves"
SPEAKER - David Marchetti
Director of Global Applications Engineering
Ocean Power Technologies (OPT)
Pennington, NJ

BRIEF SYNOPSIS:
We all rely on electricity and communications networks for business and personal use. We take for granted the availability of each.  Both are often not readily available, not reliable, or are not cost effective to create and maintain offshore. This is increasingly true in industries such as oil and gas, and can mean the difference between having a project approved or rejected. The oceans of the world have abundant untapped energy that can be harnessed for many applications. Ocean Power Technologies (OPT) has developed a PowerBuoy® that takes advantage of this energy to solve these challenges for multiple industries. The field-proven PowerBuoy® converts wave energy into electricity, and provides a payload-agnostic power platform, for a variety of remote offshore surface and subsea marine applications. The stand-alone PowerBuoy® also provides a reliable means for various forms of data to be transferred from subsea to the surface, where it can be transmitted real-time onshore via the communications equipment on the PowerBuoy®. The PowerBuoy® can be used to create an autonomous system, which reduces the need for manned intervention, increases operational efficiencies, and ultimately reduces OPEX.  The topics to be covered will include the development of the wave energy converter, an overview of the current commercial PowerBuoy®, field history, current case studies, and future potential applications.
