ASCE COPRI Seattle Chapter Monthly Dinner Meeting - Nov 29, 2017
Topic:
Dynamic Analysis of Floating Bridges with case studies of SR-520 & Homer M. Hadley

Description:
Washington State has been called the home of floating bridges.  These bridges, on Lake Washington and Hood Canal, are an innovative solution to a particular set of engineering constraints at those sites.   Foremost among these constraints is the water depth, and, in the case of Lake Washington, poor soil conditions on the lakebed, making conventional bottom-founded bridge piers impractical.  On the other hand, these bodies of water are relatively protected, making anchored floating structures a practical proposition.  Designing floating structures for public highway bridges has required a unique combination of engineering disciplines, encompassing both conventional bridge engineering and naval architecture.  The imposed bridge loads are, in most respects, similar to those faced by a conventional fixed bridge, i.e. dead loads, live loads, thermal loads, wind and wave forces, etc.  The response of the floating bridge to these loads, however, is quite different, and it behaves more like a floating vessel or offshore platform than a fixed structure.

Glosten, Inc. has provided naval architecture and analysis services to the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) and their engineering contractors since approximately 1981, including, most recently, support for the design of the replacement SR-520 bridge and the installation of light rail transit on the Homer M. Hadley (I-90) bridge.  In these projects Glosten provided the design climatology, wind and wave loads, hydrostatic responses and flooding loads to the bridge structural engineers.  These analyses required a broad range of naval architecture and ocean engineering tools, including statistical analysis, hydrostatics, seakeeping, nonlinear and dynamic finite element analysis.

In this talk Glostens John Cross-Whiter will discuss the analysis techniques employed to compute the hydrostatic, wind and wave loads for the SR-520 and Homer M. Hadley floating bridges.

Speaker:
John Cross-Whiter

John Cross-Whiter is a naval architect and ocean engineer with over 30 years of experience in the analysis, simulation and testing of ships and offshore structures.  He has been with Glosten since 2006, and leads Glostens efforts in marine simulation and dynamic analysis. He led Glostens analysis teams in the SR-520 and Homer M. Hadley projects.  Prior to joining Glosten John worked at model testing facilities in Europe, performing aerodynamic and hydrodynamic model tests on a wide variety of ships and offshore structures.
