Patterns and Identities: Data Visualization as Interface
Christian Marc Schmidt is a designer with a focus on interaction design and the dynamic display of quantitative information. In this talk, Christian will present a point of view on data visualization as an emerging mainstream discipline, and how data visualization principles are relevant for the design of interfaces to navigate large and dynamic sets of data. He will talk about how these principles have informed a range of design projects he has worked on, from the One Laptop Per Child user interface, to sited media for the Museum of Arts and Design in New York, to exploratory visualizations of social data in a city context.

Christian Marc Schmidt is principal and founder of Schema, a creative design and technology consultancy specializing in interactive experiences and data visualization. Prior to founding Schema in 2012, Christian worked at the design firms IDEO and Pentagram, and was an interaction designer at Microsoft. His experience spans the fields of information design, interaction design, and media installation. He holds a BFA from Parsons School of Design in New York, and an MFA from Yale University. His work has received recognition from organizations such as D&AD, the American Institute of Graphic Arts (AIGA), the Society for Environmental Graphic Design (SEGD), Communication Arts, Print Magazine and the Industrial Designers Society of America (IDSA). Christian has taught in the Interactive Telecommunications Program (ITP) at New York University and the Visual Communication Design program at the University of Washington.

Following the lecture, attendees are invited to gather in the private dining room at SAM's TASTE Restaurant and continue the conversation from 7:30-8:30 pm. When ordering food and drink at the bar, mention that you attended the ARCADE event and enjoy the SAM member discount. Cheers!

A HUGE thank you to the Seattle Art Museum for hosting and partnering with ARCADE on this event!
