Solo Performer Anita Woodley to Perform 11 characters at CAARE Clinic

The Men in Me: Our Fathers, Our Brothers, Our Sons... weaving more compassion and power into their stories

"The Men in Me" will play at the CAARE on February 1st at 7:00 p.m. "Mama Juggs" will play at the same location on February 2th at 3:00 p.m. Admission is $10 Advance and $15 at the door. The performance is an hour long followed by a Question and Answer session.

"The Men in Me" is a multidimensional, audience-interactive experience brought to life on stage through a one-woman theatre piece and on record through a professionally-pressed soundtrack. Woodley tells the stories of the men in her life as they fight to survive in the Oakland projects amid the temptation of drugs, the threat of violence and the specter of prison. Yet in this bleak environment, the narrator connects with her future husband, discovering the regenerative power of a healthy relationship after having endured domestic violence. And in her son, she sees the promise of a new generation raised outside the projects. Woodley shows how these men shaped her life, including by helping her narrowly avoid being sold into prostitution.

Woodley, based in Chapel Hill, was named the 2012 Emerging Artist in Drama by the Durham Arts Council. She is a national-award-winning journalist and former producer for public radio's The Story with Dick Gordon. She recently stepped away from her journalism career to focus on performing full-time. After this show, Woodley will continue touring, with shows scheduled in Pennsylvania, Nebraska and Hawaii.
