Wonderful Town, written by Joseph A. Fields & Jerome Chodorov with lyrics by Betty Comden & Adolph Green and music by Leonard Bernstein, is a delicious and delightful romp through Greenwich Village, NY, in the 1930s. Based on Fields and Chodorov's 1940 play, My Sister Eileen, the musical follows the story of two sisters who have left their home town of Columbus, Ohio, to try to make it on their own in NYC. Ruth, a shy and intelligent young woman, who wants to be a writer, faces the publishing world of men and finds all doors closed to her. Eileen on the other hand, is an outgoing, attractive actress, who used her wiles with men to get what she wants. Both struggle to find themselves and, ultimately, love, in this wildly entertaining, feel-good musical comedy.
Wonderful Town first opened on Broadway in 1953 and won five Tony awards including Best Musical. It has enjoyed many successful revivals since then including a West End production in 1986 and most recently a Broadway production in 2003 starring Donna Murphy and Laura Benanti. _________________________________________________________________ YMTC (Youth Musical Theater Company) is a non-profit, Berkeley-based company which produces professional caliber musical theater while providing exceptional theater training to students from the 7th grade through university level.
