Title:
Session #2 - Dealing with the Dangers of Doing without Thinking: Managing Desire, Bias, and Group Dynamics in High-risk Terrain.

Goal:
To provide a means of ongoing education and improvement in the decision making processes of experienced backcountry travelers.

Summary:
In this three-hour interactive workshop, we will examine the ways in which effective group decision-making occurs, drawing on outside research from other risk-focused industries. We will then seek to apply these themes in the complex and often-chaotic environment of backcountry decision making. We'll investigate tools to deal with some of the core issues: How do we manage the powerful influence of our own human dynamics when they are complex, unpredictable, and different almost every time? How can we use the resources in our backcountry groups to evaluate our decision-making in real time? What are the cultural habits and interpersonal skills that support good group decision-making?

Other Details:
This evening is geared towards to people who have some backcountry experience to those who are seasoned backcountry travelers. Skiers, snowboarders, snowshoers, and snowmobilers who are looking to improve their decision making skills are encouraged to attend. Previous avalanche training, such as an avalanche level 1 or 2, is recommended, but not required.
