Backyard is born out of our love of food, friends and the community that raised us. Growing up in the Bay has given us so much access to diversity, culture, civic engagement and creativity. We want to show our appreciation by raising funds for people and organizations that make all that possible while doing what we do best - communing over delicious food with fam and friends, old and new.
For Backyard's fall edition, we are supporting the Oakland-based Black Organizing Project (B.O.P). *More info below!
EVENT DETAILS:
The event will kick off Sunday November 12th at 3pm with music, drinks and snacks. We'll have custom cocktails made on-site, beer and other beverages. Then we'll have a family-style BBQ dinner cheffed up by cooks from Chez Panisse. Special activity/demo TBA.
It'll be going down in West Oakland, and we'll send out the address upon purchase: $45 for entry. If you can't attend, we'll miss you, but you can still donate. If you can attend but are feeling extra generous, you can donate too!
Tickets sold out last time, so get 'em while they're hot.
(**Speaking of temperature, it'll be mid-November so could be chilly! If so, we'll have some heaters, but make sure to dress for the weather!)
ORGANIZATION DETAILS:
The Black Organizing Project is a black member-led community organization working for racial, social, and economic justice through grassroots organizing and community-building in Oakland, California and beyond.
Check out their website here: http://blackorganizingproject.org/
Their signature campaign, Bettering Our School System (B.O.S.S.) focuses on eliminating policing from the Oakland Unified School District (OUSD). There is an entire police department dedicated only to Oakland schools, and those funds could be better used going towards counselors/mentors, behavioral services, classroom support and educational resources. Instead, kids - disproportionately kids of color - are facing marks on their permanent records and lifelong consequences for mistakes that are part of growing and that many of us can remember making.
A 2013 report published by B.O.P. reveals why this work is so important:
> In 2012, OUSD spent about $1.5 million on school counselors and Restorative Justice programs but spent approximately $5 million on the Oakland School Police Department.
> From 2007-2012, black youth made up on average 73.5% of all juvenile arrests by the Oakland Police Department each year, even though they made up just 29.3% of the Oakland youth population.

We feel lucky to be able to partner with an organization doing such important and ambitious youth work -- and to have all of y'all to share in the cause with! Can't wait to see everyone there!
