Scene-work Workout

Improvisation is theatre without a script. Building characters, stories and scenes from nowhere. It is great fun to do, and very beneficial. Like a gym for the mind, it builds creativity, confidence and interpersonal skills.

And at the heart of any improv show are scenes. Two people pretending to be other people. The building block from which everything from the wackiest game to the most intricate improvised play are built. Without great scenes, there could be no show. This course gives you the skills to make them easy to play and delightful to watch!

During this course, you will be introduced to a set of tools that will enable you to confidently build and advance a scene, noticing what the scene needs, supporting your partner and confidently bringing your own ideas to the mix. Learn about establishing a reality, looking for and playing the unusual thing, initiating with character and from stimulus, reading and playing off your partner and what is there already, as well as how to delight in mime and spacework. Come learn to work with whats there, add what is needed and let magic happen!

This course is suitable for beginning improvisers who are looking for a set of tools and for intermediate improvisers who want to revise and deepen their knowledge of core scenework skills.

As part of this class, you will also perform at the Nursery Theatre, Broadgate on the 21st of April.

This course next takes place over six Thursdays from 7-10pm at the Nursery Training Centre, Capital House, 42 Weston Street, SE1 3QD and costs £149. You can book at the early bird price of £119.20 until one month before the class. We also offer diversity scholarships. Please note that course fees are non-refundable when paid.
