The Tale of Another George: The Afternoon Carriage House Salon continues!
A tale of another George!  As many of us know, our own George Pardee was a major contributor to the development of the Federal Parks and Recreation Department. John Muir and Dr. Pardee brought President Theodore Roosevelt to Yosemite on a camping trip in 1903.  This was John Muir's vision and the President came away with a new attitude about protecting our wild life and keeping it safe under strong federal laws ~ preserving our wilderness by declaring them National Monuments.  After that visit, 148 million acres of bird sanctuaries and game preserves were added to the National Parks!

More than 60 years later, another visionary with the name George also turned his dreams into reality.  George Kiskaddon, totally hooked on the sea from an early age, was a captain of a Liberty ship at just 24 years old! In 1969 George started Oceanic Society with his friend, Jerold M. Lowenstein, and feisty best friend/wife Lillian at his side.   Their goal was to make people aware of the importance of the oceans to all of us on the earth and the creatures underneath.

In 1974, just five years after its founding, Christopher Du Pont Roosevelt, the grandson of Franklin D. Roosevelt, became the President and CEO of the Oceanic Society and continued at the helm through 1985.  The Oceanic Society continued to inspire and empower people worldwide to take part in building a healthy future for the world's oceans.  What an interesting coincidence those two men named George and two men named Roosevelt shared a passion for preserving our natural resources!

On Sunday, October 15th at 4:00pm George Kiskaddon's son John Kiskaddon will recount the remarkable story of the Oceanic Society at our Carriage House Salon series.  We will hear about young John sailing the high seas to Tahiti (at the age of 10!) and learning, at his father's knee, the importance of protecting the Bay from over-fishing, over-development and maintaining a clean and healthy environment for future generations.  Today John Kiskaddon continues his father's mission, the enjoyment of good music, family, whale watching and the innovative campaign to protect and preserve our oceans.  Following the lecture and PowerPoint presentation you will be able to ask John questions and then continue the discussion in the Dining Room at a hors d'oeuvres and champagne reception.

What a wonderful way to spend a Sunday afternoon and support the Pardee Home Museum with a $25 per person contribution.  Space is limited so make your reservations early!
