Permit Streamlining: Architects as Change Agents

Using case study examples, this program will inspire and empower attendees to engage local and regional code officials in moving their community toward more efficient and effective permit processing. National studies have documented significant positive impacts from properly designed and implemented permitting improvements:

-Time and money savings for design professionals and their clients

-Increased consistency in code interpretation and application

-Enhanced protection of public health, safety, and welfare in the built environment

-Higher performing buildings consistent with modern energy, sustainability, and design goals

Learning Objectives:

1. Evaluate permit streamlining programs for maintenance of critical Health, Safety, and Welfare objectives, while at the same time being more efficient and effective.

2. Develop and help implement strategies for permit streamlining tailored to local communities which create a significant economic stimulus for the benefit of the community while preserving checks and balances that protect public interests.

3. Explore options that can improve cooperation and dialogue between plan review professionals and design professionals to reduce timelines while also increasing code conformance.

4. Learn methods by which architects can serve as a catalyst in bringing increased consistency, transparency and customer service to multiple building jurisdictions in a region with resulting benefit to community economic development and the public welfare.
