DALC Fundraiser Pieta Brown, Kerosene Kites & Mark Croft at MPOH Saturday, October 21st 7PM
The Driftless Area Land Conservancy will be holding a fundraiser concert at the Mineral Point Opera House on Saturday, October 21st at 7PM. Pieta Brown will headline the show with Kerosene Kites and Mark Croft opening. All tickets for this show are general admission and cost $22 in advance and $25 at the doors.
Hailed as a "self-styled poetess, folk goddess and country waif" by the BBC, Pieta Brown first came to international attention with her 2002 self-titled debut. Pieta has since been recognized by NPR for her "moody, ethereal" songwriting, applauded by The Boston Globe for her "mercurial voice and has continued to gain wide-spread critical attention for both her singing and songwriting with each release. Wall Street Journal, American Songwriter, and Amazon have all included her albums in year-end, best-of picks. And along the way she has shared stages with everyone from Emmylou Harris and JJ Cale to Neko Case and Richard Thompson, in addition to performing at major festivals like Bonnaroo and Mountain Jam. But maybe even more importantly, to a fiercely independent artist like Pieta, she has received praise and support from many of her fellow artists and mentors - Justin Vernon, Iris Dement, Mark Knopfler, Amos Lee, producer Don Was, and film-maker Wim Wenders to name a few.
Postcards follows 2014's 'Paradise Outlaw,' which was recorded at Bon Iver's April Base studio with help from Justin Vernon (who recently described Paradise Outlaw as probably my favorite record ever made at our studio), Amos Lee, and Pietas father, Grammy-nominated folk-singer, Greg Brown. But where 'Paradise Outlaw' celebrated the sound of a group of a musicians recording live in a room together, 'Postcards' explores the role of distance and isolation in collaboration. Pieta recorded the basic guitar and vocals for the album, some with frequent collaborator Bo Ramsey (Lucinda Williams, Charlie Parr) in the mix, at a small garage studio near her home before mailing out each track to friends to complete and send back.
After years of co-writing sessions, festival planning, sporadic performances, and overall "big idea" cultivating, Beth Kille and Erik Kjelland will now perform as a duo under the group name "Kerosene Kites" and will also play shows as a full band when rocking out is deemed necessary.
These prolific songwriters and co-founders of Flannel Fest began co-writing in the fall of 2013 after both were members of the Nashville Songwriters Association - Madison Chapter. Shared experiences of life on the road and supportive families at home allowed for a common lyrical bond and a basis for their holiday-themed North Star Sessions album released in December 2014. In December 2016 Kerosene Kites released "Under Cover Holiday" an album of re-imagined holiday classic holiday songs.
An acoustic-guitar-based singer/songwriter with Roots, Pop, & Americana song styling, Mark Croft is the classic 'triple threat'; a skilled guitar player, a powerful and dynamic vocalist, and a talented songwriter and entertainer.
Mark Croft is an award-winning singer/songwriter and acoustic guitarist who has always been unafraid to break the genre barriers. Croft takes inspiration from a variety of musical styles and blends them into his own pop, roots & Americana based approach to songwriting, infusing soulful performances with infectious rhythms and unforgettable melodies. A seasoned performer, Croft has been serving up exciting and emotional shows to audiences for more than a decade. His booming baritone vocals, finely crafted songs, and ability to navigate his six-string with superiority, has garnered him praise as the a classic triple-threat.
