Kibbitznest Discussion Series is in collaboration with The University of Chicago Graham School to host presentations and discussions of original research.
Early in Shakespeare's Macbeth, the title character meets three witches who give him what he believes to be a prophecy about becoming king. He goes on to make that prophecy come true by murdering King Duncan and taking his place. But was that really the only route open to Macbeth? Others who have also faced a seemingly predestined future, such as Socrates, Oedipus, and Aeneas, handled that dilemma very differently. Comparing these stories will help us address a question that applies to all of us as well: What is the proper response to knowledge about the future?"
