An Evening of Persian Music at The Musical Offering
This program is mostly an improvisation on the contemporary techniques and patterns of Persian/Iranian classical music rooted in the classical modes of Persian music known as Radif. Two well-known Persian instruments - Tar (a long necked lute) and Tombak (goblet shaped percussion) - will perform in duet accompanied by vocalist who will use techniques specific to Persian classical styles
Behfar Bahadoran, tar
Behfar Bahadoran is a musician from Iran and has received his bachelors of fine arts in painting from Maryland Institute College of art. He moved to the United States in 2005 and developed his career as a musician and a music instructor in the first two years. He has performed at many prestigious venues including the Palace of Fine Arts in San Francisco, Lincoln Center in New York City, Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., Freer Shackler Gallery at the Smithsonian Museum, Metropolitan Museum of Art, in New York City and many more.
Reza Sarlak, tombak
Reza Sarlak was born in Aligodarz, Iran. His passion for music started at an early age of six encouraged by his parents. He began learning how to play Tonbak (known as the principal percussion instrument of Persian music) under the tutorship of Hassan Rezaei and Majid Hesabi. At the age of eleven, he was awarded the best young soloist award at the Fajr festival. His interest in Tonbak coupled with his passion to perform motivated him to further his studies and he begin studying under music masters Bahman Rajabi and Nasser Farhangfar. Over the years, Reza has performed before wide audiences both at home and abroad. He has given numerous concerts with some of the most celebrated and highly praised ensemble of musicians and performers. In 2014, he joined the Pezhvak ensemble and held concerts in California, Washington DC, and New York. In 2016, he released an album with great masters, Fakhri Malekpour and Mozaffar Shafei. Reza has PhD in Electrical Engineering and is living in Chicago now.
Siamak Sepasa, voice
Siamak Sepasa is a Persian classical crossover vocalist and singer-songwriter. He was born in Iran and started his musical training in both Radif and Middle Eastern traditions at the age of 9 under Dr. Meysami's supervision, master of the Santur, following by learning voice principles from his father. Afterwards, he started learning persian traditional vocal Avaz under supervisions of great Radif vocalists such as Ahmad Ebrahimi, Nasrollah Nasehpour, Ali Saeedi and Hamidreza Nourbakhsh and gained knowledge of Avaz techniques. Alongside perform and compose with several ensembles including Hourvash Ensemble, the Siamak Sepasa Ensemble, and others, he has participated in several music festivals and was praised to perform in Chamber Music Campania in Italy.
