Waipuna
"The men of Waipuna have once again created a recording that honors the Hawaiian language and displays the art of Hawaiian poetry in song." -- KKCR Radio

The Symphonic blends of Waipunas album Npili is so melodic, it soothes the soul and fuels your mana! -- Hawaiian 105 KINE Radio

in 2005, the Oaksong Music Society established itself as the premier venue for Hawaiian music in northern California with the first of a series of Hawaiian luau concerts at Gray Pine Farm in Oak Run. That tradition continues in 2018 when the Society presents Waipuna in their first-ever appearance in Redding.

In a few short years, Waipuna has leaped to the forefront of Hawaiian contemporary music. Winner of 3 Na Hk Hanohano (Hawaiis Grammys) Awards in 2012Group of the Year, Island Contemporary, and Single of the Year --they went on to win Single of the Year Award in 2013, 2 more Awards in 2014, for their 7-track EP Napili, and one in 2015 for E Mau Ke Aloha.

Waipuna is an exciting collaboration of three talented individuals: Kale Hannahs, Matthew Sproat, and David Kamakahi, all from celebrated Hawaiian musical families. Northstate Hawaiian music fans may recall that David Kamakahi played at the Oaksong Music Societys third Hawaiian luau concert in 2007 with his father, the late slack key master Dennis Kamakahi, and George and Keoki Kahumoku. Together Hannahs, Sproat and Kamakahi bring a fresh and contemporary energy to Hawaiian classics and to the island sound, preserving Hawaiian tradition while moving it into the 21st century. Their eclectic musical backgrounds yet similar tastes in music have led to their unique sound that draws comparisons to their name, waipuna, or spring waters- resource, life force, connecting to ancestors and nurturing generations to come. One critic has dubbed their distinctive sound neo-traditionalist- authentic roots with a contemporary energy, sensibility and joy. Their music mixes Hawaiian classics and original songs in a style all their own- they are upbeat, technically superb, and share a sense of fun that immediately connects to all audiences.

KALE HANNAHS is a veteran of the Hawaiian music scene, earning a reputation as a steady bass player and vocalist. His major in Hawaiian Studies finds voice in his songs. He has played and recorded with many of Hawaii's talented musicians and was a founding member of the award winning group 'Ale'a.

MATTHEW KAWAIOLA SPROAT was born and raised on Oahu, but is from the famous Sproat family from the Big Island. In 2003 Matt won the Big Island falsetto competition, and has both studied and performed with some of the best musicians in Hawaii.

DAVID KAMAKAHI, whose renowned father Dennis Kamakahi was one of Hawaiis most prolific songwriters, started playing ukulele at the age of 15, studying the greats, such as ukulele master and mentor Eddie Kamae. His clear natural talent shines through in his exceptionally clean technique and exhilarating playing. Like the fresh water from the mountain spring that travels downstream bringing life, Waipunas music rejuvenates the senses and delights the heart.
