Marquis Hill Blacktet
1/2 price for students at the door
Marquis Hill is arguably the new boss trumpet on the block. The Chicago native already had four solid recordings to his name when he won the Thelonious Monk Jazz Trumpet Competition in 2014. Winning the competition led to a recording contract with Concord Records and the recent release of his new album The Way We Play. Hill's music is a cross-section of jazz standards re-done as an amalgam of post-bop, R&B, and hip-hop style influences sitting side-by-side with his original groove-oriented compositions. The Blacktet features the collective talents of alto saxophonist Christopher McBride, vibraphonist Justin Thomas, bassist Joshua Ramos, and drummer Makaya McCraven. Marquis cites trumpet great Lee Morgan as an early influence, but JazzTimes favorably compares Hill's precise playing to that of Clifford Brown, with touches of Freddie Hubbard and Woody Shaw in his phrasing.
