Dancebox Movement Workshop with Victoria Bradford: "Run - The Void - Endurance"

In endurance running, I have had to learn to accept the virtue of slowness, of not reaching my potential at any given moment. I have not only acquired a peace or void while running, but also the void of coming to peace with discomfort: "Not to exercise all the power at ones disposal is to endure the void. This is contrary to all the laws of nature. Grace alone can do it. Grace fills empty spaces but it can only enter where there is a void to receive it, and it is grace itself which makes this void." On September 22 from 10am to 5pm, we will endure. We will cross this city on foot, running, walking, shifting our energy in a cadence we define as endurable. We will come to know the rhythm of our bodies as they thump against the pavement and breathe in the air. We will feel ourselves in sway with the sounds of the city around us, the movement of wind, debris, pedestrian, vehicle. We will navigate terrain like expert explorers, our form and our function in an unconscious momentum with our stride.
This will be a run not a race. Everyone is welcome to join. Care for your body includes good shoes, athletic running or tennis shoes, and water. More instructions to follow registration. Workshop gathers at Hamlin Park to start.
VICTORIA ELEANOR BRADFORD is an artist, designer, and athlete. She works primarily in the fields of performance, video, and installation, with training in the visual arts and an upbringing in theatre, dance, and voice. Victoria received an MFA in Studio from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and a BFA in Studio Art from the University of Notre Dame. She lives in Chicago, IL and continues to cultivate projects in her home state of Louisiana.
Victoria has created images, objects, installations and performances with numerous collaborators in Chicago and nationally. She is honored in 2017 to have been presented in relation to two historically significant dance figures, first as the featured artist to present a workshop in conjunction with Embodiment Abstracted: The Influence of Yvonne Rainer at Gallery 400. She also mounted a public project and performance in cooperation with the MCA Chicagos Merce Cunningham: Common Time exhibition.
Awards and recognitions include: DCASE Theatre and Dance Residency for 2016, Featured Artist for Chicago Artists Month 2015 with Neighborhood Dances also presented as an Affiliate Program for the Chicago Architecture Biennial, Defibrillator Performance Art Gallery, High Concept Labs Sponsored Artist. She has also been produced in conjunction with the McColl Center for Art + Innovation, Decordova Sculpture Park & Museum, the MCA Chicago, Open House Chicago, Chicago Artists Coalition, Design Cloud Gallery, LUMEN Video and Performance Festival, and Sullivan Galleries, among others.
The JIM realizes critical learning can happen outside of the academy. It also realizes it can happen outside of the studio. The series, Dance Box asks artists to engage the edges of their beliefs and encounter self-defining views that shape ones dancing and its relationship to the world outside of the studio.
