Leyla McCalla
1/2 Price for Students at the Door
Singing in French, Haitian Creole and English, Leyla McCalla also accompanies on cello, tenor banjo and guitar, all bringing to life a unique melding of her Haitian musical heritage with American jazz and folk. Her influences and sonic references reverberate with three centuries of history, yet remain strikingly fresh and vital. Her debut album, Vari-Colored Songs: A Tribute to Langston Hughes made many best-of lists and prompted The New York Times to praise its weighty thoughts handled with the lightest touch imaginable. As McCalla states of her socially-conscious approach to music, I cant help but be inspired by history, as well as whats going on today. Her latest album, A Day For The Hunter, A Day For The Prey, continues in that spirit.
Show at 7:00 pm Doors and dinner beginning at 6:00 pm Ticket price includes 5% city of Santa Cruz Admission Tax. Service charge additional.
