7pm - Pharoah Sanders Duo
A legendary pioneer and free jazz icon, possessing one of the tenor saxophone's most distinctive tones, Pharoah Sanders is, in the words of Ornette Coleman, "...always trying to reach out to truth." Getting his start with Sun Ra and rising to fame for his work with John Coltrane, Sanders' intense phrasing and free approach to music resulted in some of the most beloved and classic jazz albums of the '60s and '70s. Having received his 'Pharoah' nom-de-stage from poet Amiri Baraka, Sanders has a mythic, often otherworldly, style to his powerful playing. His singular tenor sound will be spotlit in this duo setting, accompanied by his longtime pianist William Henderson.
