Learning From "Migrant Mother:" What the Central Coast's Most Famous Photograph Can Tell Us About the Great Depression, Visual Culture and Ourselves -- Dick Miller

United Methodist Church, SLO

Registering for this course by buying a ticket will admit you to 2 sessions of this course.

On a cold, bleak, drizzly day in late February 1936 New Deal photographer Dorothea Lange took several pictures at a destitute migrant pea pickers camp on the Nipomo Mesa. One of them, later titled Migrant Mother, has since become the most iconic image of the Great Depression.

This two hour, two session course will explore how that haunting image came to be, and how it has influenced our understanding ever since. During the first session well review techniques for interpreting old photos, and frame Migrant Mother in its contexts of time, place, circumstance, creation, and reception. During the second session well closely examine all of the currently known photos Lange took that day in an effort to understand how and why only one of them became iconic.

Dick Miller is a frequent taker and giver of LLCC courses. He is a retired historian still trying to figure out which thousand words an old picture is worth.
