ICAA Tour of Mundelein Seminary

The campus of the University of Saint Mary of the Lake/Mundelein Seminary is a masterwork of classical design principles located just west of Libertyville, Illinois. Planned and built between 1914 and 1934, it was commissioned by Chicagos Cardinal George Mundelein to be the Catholic University of the West and offers a magnificent combination of grand Beaux Arts planning, Colonial Revival architecture and the inspiration of Renaissance Rome.

Designed by Chicago architect Joseph W. McCarthy, who worked for 8 years in the office of Daniel Burnham and whose office designed 41 churches and two cathedrals in the Chicago area, the unified ensemble of buildings and landscape stands as one of Illinois finest artistic treasures.

Architectural historian and author, Dr. Denis McNamara, who teaches in the Universitys Liturgical Institute, will lead an architectural tour of the university emphasizing the use and meaning of the campuss classical architecture, and be joined by ICAA Acanthus Award recipient Thomas Norman Rajkovich, who designed the newest addition to the campus, Mundelein Hall.
