eSe Teatro is thrilled to present Mud (Barro) by Maria Irene Fornés in the historical INS immigration building (Inscape Arts & Cultural Center) in The Slate Theatre. Select performances in Spanish, translated by Rose Cano.
Poverty. Survival. Dignity.
Informed by the current crisis on homelessness in Seattle, this production highlights the precarious situation of 3 individuals who form a family out of sheer necessity, living on the thin edge of survival and the margins of society. May (Maya) works in manual labor and is learning to read. Lloyd (Eloy) is sick and cant afford medicine. Henry (Henri) moves in and shows May the possibility of using her intellect. More than a love triangle, MUD is a survival triangle with no safety net to catch Henry when he falls.
It will be presented in English and Spanish (separate performances) at The Slate Theatre (formerly the old immigration building). This translation of Mud (Barro) was produced in Lima, Peru in 1990 with support from the U.S. Embassy. It was the first translation of this play in South America, during the height of the civil war in Peru.
Featuring an entirely Latino/a cast and creative team, eSe Teatro strives to provide professional opportunities to local Latinx artists by offering unique stories and programming that reflect our broad multicultural community.

ABOUT ESE TEATRO
Founded in 2010, eSe Teatros mission is to empower local Latino artists to create, produce and promote professional theater in English, Spanish, bilingual and Spanglish. eSe Teatro honors self-definition and inclusion, striving to represent all the colors in the rainbow of brown", and to provide a voice for Latinx artists and communities by sharing culturally and socially relevant stories through innovative programming, workshops, and initiatives. Affiliated artists range from immigrants to U.S. born, Spanish-speaking and non-Spanish-speaking, representing cultures and heritages from all over The Americas and Caribbean.
ABOUT THE DIRECTOR/ TRANSLATOR
Rose Cano, a graduate of Cornish, is co-founder and Artistic Director of eSe Teatro: Seattle Latinos Take Stage since 2010. She is a bilingual actor, playwright, director and lyricist. Directing credits include Barro sponsored by the US Embassy in Lima, Peru in 1990, eSe Amor: Great Works of Love followed by eSe Oro: Classics from the Golden Age of Spain, and Electricidad by Luis Alfaro at ACT Theatre, and El Ultimo Coconut by Gerald Alejandro Ford at Cornish College of the Arts. Her plays Don Quixote & Sancho Panza, Homeless in Seattle and Bernies Apt. were recently produced in partnership with ACT Theatre. She is also a translator of plays such as Elliot: A Soldiers Fugue (Elliot: La Fuga de un Soldado) by Quiara Alegria Hudes and El Viaje de la Santa (The Journey of the Saint) by Cesar de Maria.
ABOUT THE PLAYWRIGHT
María Irene Fornés (born May 14, 1930) is a Cuban-American Avant garde playwright and director who was a leading figure of the Off-Off-Broadway movement in the 1960s. Fornés' themes focused on poverty and feminism. Moreover, on personal and artistic levels, her lesbian identity has been central to her art. In 1965, she won her first Distinguished Plays Obie Award for Promenade and The Successful Life of 3. She was also a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize with her play And What of the Night? in 1990. Other notable works include Fefu and Her Friends, Mud, Sarita, and Letters from Cuba. Fornés became known in both Hispanic-American and experimental theatre in New York, winning a total of nine Obie Awards.
Mud (Barro) runs from July 13 - July 30th at The Slate Theatre, 815 Seattle Blvd. S #140, 98134, in the historical Art Inscape Building (formerly INS)
