Climate Change: Science, Impacts, Challenges, Solutions -- Dr. Ray Weymann
For a scientist studying climate change, "eureka" moments are unusually rare. Instead progress is generally made by a painstaking piecing together of evidence from every new temperature measurement, satellite sounding or climate-model experiment. Data get checked and rechecked, ideas tested over and over again. Do the observations fit the predicted changes? Could there be some alternative explanation? Good climate scientists, like all good scientists, want to ensure that the highest standards of proof apply to everything they discover.

Dr. Ray Weymann has a PhD in Astrophysics and is a member of the National Academy of Sciences. Since retiring he has used his background in physics to give numerous lectures in climate science and is one of the founders of the Climate Science Rapid Response Team and has a climate science website:CentralCoastClimateScience.org.

This course presents the scientists' understanding of the issue. Dr. Weymann will explain the basic laws governing the earth's climate system: energy balance, the greenhouse effect, and the concepts of "forcings" and "feedbacks".He will discuss  the evidence  that climate change is occurring and that human consumption of fossil fuels  is the main contributor to current and future climate change.   He will describe the impacts on climate change on human society, as well as on the whole ecosphere of the planet.

Dr. Weymann will explain the two types of action that are required to deal with climate change: a) adapting to the changes for which we are already "locked in"  and/or  b) the steps at all levels (individual, community, state, nation and global) that can be taken to control future warming to levels we can deal with and to avoid serious irreversible effects

During the course we will also explore the "sociological" and "psychological" aspects of the resistance that much of the public still has to climate change. The class participants will be invited to voluntarily conduct some interviews with relatives or friends to get a better understanding of the range of opinions people have. Participants will also be asked to think of apt metaphors we can use to convey some concepts of climate change to others.
