Space.City: Vincent James lecture
As the work of VJAA has evolved over the past ten years, the firm has developed an approach to design that we call polyvalent.  In the simplest of terms, we want our work to be diverse, adaptable, and capable of addressing a broad range of issues.  We believe that if the profession of architecture is to remain relevant, then the practice of architecture needs to become more plastic, not simply in terms of the appearance of buildings but in terms of how they are conceived, how they function, and how they respond to particular conditions.  Vincent James and Jennifer Yoos

Vincent James is founding principal of VJAA a twenty-person architectural firm with a focus on designing innovative, highly crafted buildings. The office has received ten national design awards within the past eight years, including six Progressive Architecture Awards and two National American Institute of Architects Honor Awards.  In 2001, the firm received the Award in Architecture from the American Academy of Arts and Letters.  The work of VJAA is the subject of a recent monograph published by Princeton Architectural Press in 2007 and numerous national and international periodicals and books.

As an Adjunct Professor at Harvard Universitys Graduate School of Design from 2000 through 2008, Vincent James taught Design Studios and Professional Practice.  Prior to teaching at Harvard, Vincent was appointed the Favrot Visiting Chair in Architecture at Tulane School of Architecture in 1998 and 1999.  Vincent has also taught at the University of Minnesota and the University of Wisconsin/Milwaukee where he received his graduate degree in Architecture in 1978.
