Training Highlights

This interactive workshop provides experiential training applying affirmative CBT treatment strategies for working with LGBTQ clients experiencing depression and other mental health concerns. The most essential elements of AFFIRM are presented with a focus on: the underlying research- based tenets associated with an affirmative practice framework for LGBTQ clients as well as clinical considerations associated with implementing the intervention strategies associated with each module of AFFIRM.

Attendees will learn the skills necessary to effectively:
1. Affirm sexual and gender minority identities
2. Engage in case formulation that attends to the specific needs of LGBTQ clients
3. Enhance client ability to cope with anti-LGBTQ discrimination
4. Implement strategies aimed at helping clients modify unhelpful thoughts, create affirmative support networks, engage in healthy and affirming behaviours and sustain hope.

-All attendees will receive the AFFIRM manual and a Certificate of Completion

- Continental breakfast and lunch provided
- Workshop capped at 30 participants

Trainers: Dr. Shelley Craig & Dr. Ashley Austin

The AFFIRM creators (Dr. Shelley Craig, Canada Research Chair in Sexual and Gender Minority Youth, LCSW, RSW & Dr. Ashley Austin, LCSW) are Associate Professors and administrators with extensive research and program development experience targeting LGBTQ youth. Dr. Craig has designed, delivered and evaluated interventions to LGBTQ youth in community for over 25 years. She has been a leader in many LGBTQ organizations as Executive Director or chairing Boards of Directors (eg PFLAG National, Heartstrong). Dr. Austin has specialized in clinical services with gender diverse children and youth for decades and provide community leadership to enhance affirmative programs. They provide an extensive training, materials and program support to ensure positive outcomes and delivery in a range of settings.

Program Evidence: Based on the extensive research base demonstrating that Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) is among the most effective interventions for child, adolescent and adult mental and behavioral health, AFFIRM is based on the tenets of CBT while simultaneously attending to the unique needs, experiences and challenges of LGBTQ  young people. * Importantly, AFFIRM is rooted in an LGBTQ affirmative practice framework that allows for safe exploration of the impact of anti-LGBTQ stigma and  discrimination on the lives of LGBTQ youth and adults with the primary aim of developing more helpful and effective strategies for coping with LGBTQ specific stressors.

Program Delivery: AFFIRM is typically delivered by mental health professionals in both group-based and individual-based formats. The eight modules are designed to for flexible implementation, making them easy to integrate in a variety of settings and contexts (e.g., hospitals, schools, community centers, residential programs. AFFIRM is manualized allowing for easy and streamlined delivery of the intervention by a wide-range of social work, counseling or mental health professionals.
