The Work of Imagining: Art in the Age of "Apocalypse"

Choreographer/educator Jesse Phillips-Fein and scholar/writer Shanté Paradigm Smalls join forces to co-curate a multi-genre performance event that asks us to wonder, witness, and explore what we do and make when the world we imagined we lived in goes away. As part of JACKs year-long series, Reparations365, the event will probe how we might imagine the end of the world as a possibility and an opening, and explores the ways art, performance, theory, discourse, argument, and community-building might shift and expand our political and social imaginations.

PROGRAM:
Angela Arrocha presents a shadow puppet show based on a scene in Laszlo Krasznahorkai's apocalyptic novel, The Melancholy of Resistance.

Avram Finkelstein's large-scale graphic intervention involves the manipulation of Internet images to illustrate how low-tech responses can still be drawn on to mediate the tactical realities of power -- even power seized through high-tech means.

Love in the Time of Trump is the first collaboration between artist and lovers Robin Marquis and Waqia Abdul-Kareem. A comical play on Gabriel Garcia Marquez's 1985 literary classic "Love in the Time of Cholera," Robin and Waqia conceived the piece the night of the 2016 presidential election. Love in the Time of Trump is about love and desire in the midst of utter chaos and destruction.

Ashley Marinaccio's "Theatre... Post" is a photography project consisting of a series of interviews and photographs with New York theatre artists, imagining what the theatre and performing arts landscape look like post-apocalypse.

ACCESSIBILITY: JACK has a portable wheelchair ramp that will be put out during this event for attendees who need assistance getting into the space (which is a three-inch rise from sidewalk level). We have two bathrooms, one of which is large, but not large enough to be in accordance with national accessibility guidelines (it doesn't have a 60" turning diameter).
