Workshop: The Music of Badi
WORKSHOP - THE MUSIC OF BADI:

Badi Assad is one of those rare artists who mix different musical influences into her work. Very early she learned that it was possible to play more than one instrument at the same time, producing another sound simultaneously with her voice. This is all due to years of research in music, especially in ethnic music. Badi absorbed brazilian instrumental, world music, the music of the Pygmies, Indians, hip-hop (beatbox), brazilian popular music, jazz, etc.

In her workshop, Badi will share different ways of listening and feeling the music. In a circle the participants learn different possibilities of how to use their voices and bodies, exploring several rhythms to create compositions full of life. Exercises inspire free styles in a group interaction.

The goal is to broaden the participants' musical horizons where music can be present at all times - and in a very playful and accessible way. The approach opens the door to improvisation and creative freedom.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND?
Singers, dancers, instrumentalists (all strings, piano, wind, percussion, etc), etc. Skill level required is moderate, but participants should have a minimum sense of rhythm.

NOTE: Advance tickets are $30, $40 at the door.

ABOUT BADI ASSAD:

BADI ASSAD is a renowned guitar player, singer, vocal juggler, and songwriter from São Paulo. She is regarded as one of the most complete and virtuoso artists of her generation. The Los Angeles Times once remarked on her guitar playing, "Badi Assad redefines solo performance! Revelatory, a brilliant display of innovation, imagination, and skill almost hypnotically compelling!"

With 14 albums released worldwide (her Wonderland, 2006, was selected among the 100 Best from the prestigious BBC London and was also included among the 30 Best on Amazon.com), Badi was selected - alongside artists such as Ben Harper and Ani DiFranco - as one of the guitar players that would revolutionize the world (US Guitar Player).

Embraced by Verve (Universal) and eDGe Music (Deutsche Grammophon), she performed and toured the world including prestigious international festivals like the North Sea Jazz Festival, the Stimmen Festival, and theaters like Paris Opera, Metropolitan Museum.

Badi had her song "Waves" featured in the soundtrack of "It Runs In The Family" (featuring Michael and Kirk Douglas) and had songs in top 10 in Europe.

In 2004, Badi toured with the legendary guitarists Larry Coryell and John Abercrombie, with the project Three Guitars. In 2006, she started a new project with her brothers, the famous Duo Assad, renowned masters of the classical guitar.

In 2010, to celebrate her 20-year career, she released a commemorative DVD "Badi Assad." in 2012, Badi released her first independent and authorial album through her own label Between Love and Luck, already conquering the award of Best Composer of The Year (APCA/BR). Her song "Pega no Coco" won 1st prize in the USA Internacional Songwriting Competition (world music category).

In the same year Badi was selected among the Brazilian guitar masters of history (Rolling Stones Magazine).

In 2014 Badi was commissioned by The Guitar Film Festival Marathon in NY, to compose for the Chinese silent film 'The Goddess' (1934) and she performed it live at the 'Merkin Hall' (NY). For the same Festival she was invited to be the curator and her night was highlighted as the best of the Festival by the NYTimes; In July she released her first CD dedicated to children Cantos de Casa and received the 'Trophy Cata-Vento' as best CD of the year.

In 2015 Badi released "Hatched" featuring acclaimed covers of modern icons such as Lorde and Skrillex.
