Struggle & Hope / The Land Beneath Our Feet - 12th Annual Harlem International Film Festival
STRUGGLE & HOPE
Director: Kari Barber
US, 65 min

Struggle & Hope follows the stories of four residents of the remaining historically all-black towns: retired teacher Shirley Nero, juke joint owner Selby Minner, recent college graduate and rancher Spencer Nero (a distant relation to Shirley), and younger than usual town council member Keisha Gaines. Each has launched an effort to try to keep people in their town and keep the towns from disappearing like so many already have. Meanwhile, renaissance man and former college professor Dr. Harold Aldridge Jr. searches for meaning again in life after the death of his father. His story underlies the importance of place, knowing ones own history and, ultimately, why these towns are worth fighting for.

THE LAND BENEATH OUR FEET
Directors: Gregg Mitman, Sarita Siegel
Liberia, UK, US, 60 min

When lost footage from the 1920s depicting a corporate land grab in the early days of globalization arrives back in Liberia, it sparks inquiry into how Liberians lost sovereignty over the very land that sustains them.

We have recently completed a one-hour documentary, The Land Beneath Our Feet, that weaves together rare archival footage from a 1926 Harvard expedition to Liberia with the journey of a young Liberian man seeking to understand how the past has shaped land rights issues in Liberia today. Approximately 25 percent of land in Liberia has been granted by the government to multinational corporations for large-scale agricultural, mining, and logging concessions in the name of development. Liberia is just a microcosm of the ways in which large-scale land concessions are transforming livelihoods and cultures across the world.
