Falling in Love with Wagner's Master Singers by John Frey
This is a 6-session course featuring videos of Four Wagner operas:

Der Fliegende Holländer (The Flying Dutchman) - A ship captain is condemned, for his blasphemy, to sail on the seven seas for eternity until he is redeemed by the love of a faithful woman. He is allowed to set foot on shore once every 7 years. Driven by a storm into a Norwegian harbor, he finds salvation through Senta who leaps into the sea to save his soul.

Lohengrin - Elsa is accused of murdering her brother in order to gain his throne. She is saved by Lohengrin, the Knight of the Grail, who appears in a boat drawn by a swan. Lohengrin defeats her accuser in a contest of arms and agrees to marry her on the condition that she never ask his name. She breaks her vow by asking his name and falls prostrate as he leaves.

Tannhäuser - In the Venusberg, Tannhäuser sings in praise of the profane pleasures offered by Venus. He leaves Venus and finds himself in a valley near the Wartburg Castle where he is welcomed by old friends. He returns to the Wartburg where he is greeted by Elisabeth. In the ensuing song contest he sings in praise of Venus and is banished by the knights. He attempts to redeem himself by joining a pilgrimage to Rome but is refused absolution by the Pope. He is redeemed by the love of the saintly Elisabeth who dies of a broken heart.

Die Meistersingers of Nürnberg - Walther, a knight, falls in love with Eva, the daughter of Pogner, a Meistersinger. Pogner offers her in marriage to the winner of a song contest. Walther is invited to sing a trial song, but is declared a failure by the marker, Beckmesser. The cobbler, Hans Sachs, helps Walther compose a new song with which he wins the contest and the hand of Eva. The citizens of Nürnberg honor Sachs for preserving the art of German song.

The six sessions will cover these four operas and will meet  from 1-4 PM on Thursdays, January 3. 10, 17, 24, 31 and
