From the rootsy folk rock of Sawyer Lawson, through the beat driven jazz rock and hip hop of Bulldog to the funk rock of Blair and Co. tonight at the Lizard proves to be as entertaining as ever!
Anchored by interlocking electric guitars and rock-solid grooves, and topped off with soaring vocals and two horns, Blair & Company combines rock, funk, and a healthy dose of improvisation to create fresh music for both your head and your feet. Comprised of working musicians in New York and Boston, members of Blair & Company have performed with Grace Potter, The Temptations, The Four Tops, Frankie Valli, FUN, in Broadway pit orchestras, and in countless other local, regional and national acts. Tonight they celebrate the release of their first mini-album, Good Vibrations.
Bulldog is a five-piece lyric- and beat-driven jazz-rock band with pop, hiphop, and neosoul elements. Newly relocated to Boston, Bulldog formed in Amherst, Massachusetts in 2013. With strong influences from Hiatus Kaiyote, Robert Glasper, Little Dragon, St. Vincent, Portishead, Jeff Buckley, and Ween, the bands sound ranges from singer songwriter to hiphop, to funk, even to experimental and free jazz. Bulldog thrives at the intersection of jazz and hiphop, of pop and experimental. Their improvised progressions, or jams over a single loop, contrast their other arranged compositions at concerts. A performance might include a musician or rapper sitting in, and often tunes are never played the same twice. The bands lineup consists of Nora Murphy on vocals and electric guitar, Craig Holland on four- and six-string bass guitar, Ben Silverman on drums, Alec Hutson on saxophone and vocals, and Christian Tremblay on Rhodes and organ.
Singer-songwriter/funky rootsy folk rock may not roll off the tongue or physically fit into the genre column on iTunes for that matter, but its the best way to describe the music of Massachusetts-based Sawyer Lawson. As music blog Red Line Roots puts it, "He is a master at blending multi-genres together into his sound." Centered around a sturdy backbone of acoustic guitar, Lawsons material has an unmistakable folk/Americana aesthetic. But with his funky rhythmic grooves, unconventional chord voicings, and reflective lyrics, his sound is something decidedly more contemporary. Shine, his debut full-length album, (released March 2015) has made its way onto over sixty radio station playlists all over the U.S. and some in Canada and Europe. His shows come in a variety of incarnations, from intimate solo acoustic performances to electrifying full band concerts.
