Global Classroom: Women Making a Difference in East Africa

Half of all farmers in the developing world are women, and women farmers can grow 30% more food if they have access to the same resources as men. By helping women farmers boost production, we could reduce global hunger by 150 million people. www.gatesfoundation.org

Join Global Classroom for a special evening at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation focusing on women in East Africa (Somalia, Ethiopia, Eritrea, Djibouti, Tanzania, Kenya, Uganda, and Sudan). First we will tour the new Visitor Center and see how the Foundation works in health and poverty depends on multiple partners working to solve problems together. You will have time to view the exhibits and learn about issues and solutions in Maternal Child Health, Nutrition, Family Planning, and Agriculture Development. Afterwards a light buffet will be served in the foundation conference center followed by a small panel of Foundation staff that has worked with women who are making a difference in East Africa. These include: Regina Kaping a Senior Program Officer in Agriculture Development with a special focus on access and markets and Brian Mulligan a Program Officer on the Integrated Delivery Team for Ethiopia Collaboration.

Finally, we will distribute teaching resources and discuss how we as Puget Sound teachers can learn from our East Africa students. Nathan Hale High School social studies teacher Erin Lynch will lead a discussion with several of her high school students from East Africa. They will share their perspectives on adjusting to high school life in Seattle and how teachers can help empower East African students in the classroom.

Teachers will also receive information on how to book a free class tour of the Visitor Center.

Cost: $30 ($32.04 for online registration) includes presentations, resource packet, light buffet, parking garage fees, and 3 clock hours. Please register by midnight 1/23/13. Space is limited to the first 60 teachers who register.
