Down Mexico Way is a docu-cabaret performance of the life and music of the iconic Mexican singer, Chavela Vargas. Songs, story-telling and visual images present Vargas, her mentors and collaborators (Diego Rivera & Frida Kahlo) within the art world and social milieu of mid century Mexico City, when it was the cultural capital of Latin America.

My stories and performance begin with Spanish songs I grew up listening to - songs my Puerto Rican mother loved. I discovered that so many of those Spanish pop songs were Mexican. And so, I found myself on a musical journey Down Mexico Way, which led to Chavela Vargas,   muse to Spanish film maker, Pedro Almodovar and great friend of Frida Kahlo. Chavela said, Frida painted her bitterness and pain and I sang it. Frida taught me how to live; how to be an artist".

Chavela Vargas sang well into her 80s, making her Carnegie Hall debut in 2003 when she was 83 years old. She was honored with a Latin Grammy in 2007 for lifetime achievement in music. Chavela Vargas, the rough voice of tenderness, died in 2012 at the age of 93, after a musical life that spanned almost 80 years. Mariachi bands played at her state funeral in Mexico City. A word has been coined for her - chavelaza - which means to be consumed by emotion.

Bio
"I have been an actress and singer for over 40 years, performing in NYC cabaret and off- Broadway.  In 2006 I spent nine months in Italy as a Fulbright Scholar and since then have presented PowerPoint images and commentary on my research project to Italian American cultural organizations in New York, Connecticut and Rhode Island.
Recently I developed and began singing a program of songs written by women. I added Spanish songs my Puerto Rican mother loved, written by the many great, Latina songwriters.  I discovered Chavela Vargas and as my research broadened and deepened, I decided to create a program of Spanish songs focused on this artist. This docu-cabaret project draws on my lifes experiences as a performer, researcher and scholar".
