History of Science Part 2 -- Dick Jackson

This is a five session course. Buying a single ticket for this course admits you to all five sessions/classes.

Prior to the 17th century original thought had been discouraged, both by custom and by the authorities (churches).

However, beginning toward the end of the 1600's great thinkers began to ask and answer fundamental questions about the world we experience. This series of lectures covers the start of what we now call science and goes on to describe the advances made up to the end of the 19thC. If you are fascinated by ideas -- correct, incorrect or just plain wacko, you will enjoy these lectures by an acclaimed professor of history.

This is a series of DVD lectures on the history of science: 1700 1900.

Part Two of this series, presented here, will comprise five sessions covering 10 lectures, taking us from the beginning of the 19th century onward. Along the way we will explore such things as the beginnings of biology, the discovery and interpretation of fossils, and the dispute over spontaneous generation of life and the germ theory. These will lead into the furious debate over evolution and Darwin's theory. The effect of these scientific developments on society and religious belief are discussed.

You will have ample time for discussion led by Dick Jackson.

Further classes will be arranged in the future to complete the lecture series.
