A Day With Copeland, Gershwin & Tchaikovsky -- Sandy Eastman

Sandy Eastman is offering you an opportunity to attend his pre-concert class and the symphony dress rehearsal for a San Luis Obispo Symphony concert on May 6.
The San Luis Obispo Symphony offers anyone in the community an opportunity to attend the dress rehearsal of its concerts during the morning (11am-1pm) preceding the evening of the performance.
There is a cost now to attend the Symphony rehearsals. At the PAC, adults must pay $15 and seniors (age 65 and older) must pay $10. The rehearsal is free to children. The tickets for the dress rehearsal will available about a week before the performance at the PAC box office or by calling them at (805) 7564849.

The Symphonys Season Finale will see Maestra Rei Hotoda lead the orchestra in pieces by two famed, contemporary American composers and a master, popular Russian composer.
The evening begins with Copland's An Outdoor Overture, composed in 1938 with its distinct, expansive and adventurous sound. Hotoda, a classically trained pianist, will collaborate with fellow virtuoso pianist Ji on another American classic; Gershwin's Piano Concerto in F. Written in 1925, the concerto is fluid and, often played with an agitated tempo and urgency, embodying the emerging, frenetic pace of American life at the time. The evening ends with Tchaikovsky's famous, big Symphony No. 4 in F minor, Op.36. This symphony was patterned off of Beethovens 5th with the theme of fate.
Rei Hotoda is rapidly becoming one of Americas most sought after and dynamic artists. Ms. Hotoda is currently Associate Conductor of the Utah Symphony Orchestrathe first female to hold this position in the Orchestras 75-year history. She has also held Assistant Conductor positions with the Dallas Symphony Orchestra and Winnipeg Orchestra.
Ji is a superstar in his native Korea, launched to fame at age 10 when he became the youngest pianist to win the New York Philharmonic's Young Artists Competition. Since then, he's won a number of high-profile awards and has performed as a soloist with some of the most prestigious symphonies in the world. He is currently gaining notoriety as the the star of a national Android commercial in which he performs Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata on two pianos, one that features the usual 88 pitches on a piano, and one that is tuned so that each key plays a middle C.
This course will be in two parts. In the early morning, there will be a lecture about the composers, about the pieces that will be played in the rehearsal, and about the soloist. In the late morning, the class, as a group, will attend the dress rehearsal of the performance in the Christopher Cohan Center at the PAC at Cal Poly. At the dress rehearsal the SLO Symphony conductor will speak as he conducts, giving background information, musicology, and notes on harmony. With the conductor's broad knowledge and stage presence, the dress rehearsals are fairly comprehensive.
Silsby Eastman (Sandy) grew up and spent his working life in the Los Angeles area before moving to Pismo Beach. He has taught at Cuesta and Allan Hancock Colleges and has been playing bassoon, baritone saxophone, and bridge as often as possible. After graduating from Occidental College and Indiana University, he studied conducting bassoon with Walter Ritchie and conducting with Lauris Jones and Richard Lert. He served as a bandsman in the Air Force and taught in San Bernardino, La Canada, Paramount and Agoura Hills. He is also a former member of the Long Beach Coterie Sinfonique, the Pasadena Community Orchestra and the Topanga Symphony.
