Understanding Artist Contracts
Understanding Artist Contracts
Presented in partnership with Washington Lawyers for the Arts
Wednesday, May 17, 12-1 p.m.
$10 / free for Artist Trust Members

In this webinar, attorney Mike Meints and artist & public art manager for the City of Seattles Office of Arts & Culture Kristen Ramirez provide an overview of the different types of artist contracts, including grants, public art, commissions, and temporary work, as well as their key components and terms. Youll learn how to review and analyze contracts, how to make sense of copyright and licensing, and how to invoice and pay yourself, so you dont sign your name to something youll regret later. A Q&A will follow the presentation.

*This webinar is ideal for artists of all disciplines, especially for public artists, grant applicants and recipients, teaching artists, and artists working on commission or on contract.

About the Speakers
Mike Meints is an attorney at Sophos Law Firm with a practice that focuses on providing advice related to business transactions, IP licensing, fundraising, business structure and formation, company and board governance, and regulatory compliance. Mike also advises his clients on the creation and protection of trademark rights, copyright rights, and trade secrets.

Kristen Ramirez is a studio and public artist who enjoys investigating our sense of place. Ramirez works managing public art projects for the City of Seattle's Office of Arts & Culture and also serves as artist-in-residence to Seattle's Department of Transportation. Originally from San Francisco, Ramirez came to Seattle to earn her MFA from the University of Washington. She also holds a MA in Education from San Francisco State University and a BA from UC Santa Cruz. Prior to her work at the City of Seattle, she has worked as an educator, an artist, and an arts administrator at Pratt Fine Arts Center, Edmonds Community College, and Cornish College of the Arts. Ramirez loves community engaged projects and regularly teaches with Path with Art, an arts organization that offers art classes to adults in recovery.
