Cubs Fans! Join us at The Standard Club for Tom Verducci and Cubs President of Baseball Operations Theo Epstein in conversation with Jonathan Eig! They will discuss Tom's new book The Cubs Way: The Zen of Building the Best Team in Baseball and Breaking the Curse.

Tom Verducci is Sports Illustrateds senior baseball writer and two-time National Sportswriter of the Year. He is also a two-time Emmy Awardwinning game and studio analyst for Fox Sports and MLB Network. He was cowriter of The Yankee Years with Joe Torre.

Theo Epstein is an American baseball executive and attorney currently serving as the President of Baseball Operations for the Chicago Cubs of Major League Baseball. On November 25, 2002, Epstein became the youngest general manager in the history of MLB, when the Boston Red Sox hired him at the age of 28. In 2004, the Red Sox won their first World Series championship in 86 years and won another championship in 2007. Epstein resigned in October 2005, but was rehired as GM and executive vice president on January 24, 2006. On October 21, 2011, he resigned from his job in Boston to become President of Baseball Operations for the Chicago Cubs, who  in 2016  won their first World Series championship in 108 years.

Jonathan Eig is a former staff writer for The Wall Street Journal, where he remains a contributing writer. Eig has also written for The New York Times, The New Yorker, The Washington Post, and Slate.com, among others. Prior to The Wall Street Journal, he worked as a feature writer for Chicago magazine and as a news reporter for The Dallas Morning News and The New Orleans Times-Picayune. Eig has taught writing at Columbia College Chicago and Northwestern. He has spoken to audiences at the Library of Congress, the National Archives, Harvard Medical School, and the National Baseball Hall of Fame. His first book, Luckiest Man: The Life and Death of Lou Gehrig, won the Casey Award for best baseball book of the year.

The Book:
It took 108 years, but it really happened. The Chicago Cubs are once again World Series champions.

How did a team composed of unknown, young players and supposedly washed-up veterans come together to break the Curse of the Billy Goat? Tom Verducci, twice named National Sportswriter of the Year and co-writer of The Yankee Years with Joe Torre, will have full access to team president Theo Epstein, manager Joe Maddon, and the players to tell the story of the Cubs' transformation from perennial underachievers to the best team in baseball.

Beginning with Epstein's first year with the team in 2011, Verducci will show how Epstein went beyond "Moneyball" thinking to turn around the franchise. Leading the organization with a manual called "The Cubs Way," he focused on the mental side of the game as much as the physical, emphasizing chemistry as well as statistics.

To accomplish his goal, Epstein needed manager Joe Maddon, an eccentric innovator, as his counterweight on the Cubs' bench.  A man who encourages themed road trips and late-arrival game days to loosen up his team, Maddon mixed New Age thinking with Old School leadership to help his players find their edge.  

The Cubs Way takes readers behind the scenes, chronicling how key players like Rizzo, Russell, Lester, and Arrieta were deftly brought into the organization by Epstein and coached by Maddon to outperform expectations. Together, Epstein and Maddon proved that clubhouse culture is as important as on-base-percentage, and that intangible components like personality, vibe, and positive energy are necessary for a team to perform to their fullest potential.
