Chez Bushwick Presents Care as Resistance: conversations on empathy + desire; A two day gathering curated by: kate watson-wallace
Curated by kate watson-wallace

Participating Artists: luciana achugar, Samita Sinha, Jaamil Olawale Kosoko, Veronica Casado Hernadez, devynn emory

In conversation with bell hooks, spiritual leader Thich Nhat Hanh says, We should ask the question whether we are capable of loving ourselves as well as others. Are we treating our body kindly by the way we eat, by the way we drink, by the way we work? Are we treating ourselves with enough joy and tenderness and peace? Or are we feeding ourselves with toxins that we get from the marketthe spiritual, intellectual, entertainment market?

With this prompt in mind, artist and choreographer kate watson-wallace hosts a two-day gathering of practice and presentation centered around questions of care, empathy, and desire as practices of resistance. Through physical practice and scholarly presentation, we ask: What does self-care look and feel like, in our practice, our personal lives, our activism? How does this shift redefine itself based on varying situations? Does the label radical problematize the act or experience of care? Can a return to pleasure, desire, empathy, slowness be a counter to the forces of the market? What economies are we individually and collectively operating within to live within spaces of self-care? How does care manifest as a formal structure inside an art work?

On the first evening, scholars, artists, healers and activists engaged in varying strategies of radical care will present for twelve minutes each on their research as part of a pecha kucha. Following the presentations, a short panel will be held to discuss topics of care.

On the second evening, choreographer luciana achugar will teach a shared movement practice. achugars pleasure practice challenges notions of institutional structures in the art world, through a reconnecting to desire and pleasure as places of power.
