Science Matters: Flora Lichtman and Sharon Shattuck
Our 3rd Edition of Science Matters welcomes Flora Lichtman and Sharon Shattuck to Bowery Poetry Club for a screening, presentation and Q&A discussion!

Through a mix of paper craft, digital animation, documentary film and radio journalism, Flora Lichtman and Sharon Shattuck, the co-founders of Sweet Fern Productions, engage audiences with science. Their Emmy-nominated video series "Animated Life" appeared on The New York Times Op-Docs channel, and told stories about paradigm-shifting scientific discoveries with handmade paper puppets.

Shattuck and Lichtman will divulge the forking paths that led them to become science storytellers and accidental puppeteers. Theyll use a riotous mix of humor, video clips, audio clips and behind-the-scenes photos to illustrate their production process, and theyll reveal the ways in which they use traditional storytelling forms--documentary film, radio, and animation--to create unusual work that captures the imagination.

Sharon Shattuck is a documentary filmmaker and television producer. Sharons first feature, 'From This Day Forward,' about growing up with a transgender parent, was distributed theatrically with Argot Pictures, broadcast nationally on POV (PBS) in Fall 2016, and is currently on Netflix, Hulu, iTunes, and SundanceNow. She's the co-creator of the Emmy-nominated New York Times Op Docs science series 'Animated Life,' which pairs stringent journalism and paper puppets. 'Animated Life: Seeing The Invisible' won a 2015 CINE Golden Eagle Award. She designed and animated several award-winning documentary films and shorts, including the Emmy-nominated feature, The City Dark, The Search For General Tso, and Love Between The Covers. Her short video and animation work has appeared in the New York Times, PBS, Slate, Vice, ProPublica, and Radiolab. Shes currently a producer on National Geographic Explorer.

Flora Lichtman a science journalist and the host of the podcast Surprisingly Awesome, from Gimlet Media. Before that, Flora wrote for Bill Nye's Netflix show "Bill Nye Saves the World" airing spring 2017, and co-directed the Emmy-nominated video series Animated Life on The New York Times Op-Docs channel. Flora's first gig in journalism was at public radio's Science Friday, where she became the managing editor of video and substitute host. Before getting into journalism, Flora worked for a NATO oceanographic lab in Italy. For the lab's research expeditions, Flora lived on an Italian ship where apertivi were served on the top deck, hoisted there via pulley by the ship's chef.
