Leo Costello: J.M.W. Turner and the Subject of History
Leo Costello teaches eighteenth- and nineteenth-century European art and specializes in Romantic European painting. He will be speaking at the Chelmsford Center for the Arts about the great British painter, J.M.W. Turner. Prof. Costello worked for two years at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston before coming to Rice in Fall 2004, having received his Ph.D. from Bryn Mawr College. Since being at Rice he has been a four-time finalist for the George R. Brown teaching award and hopes to actually win it one day. In 2013 he was the recipient of the Graduate Student Associations award for Graduate Teaching and Mentoring. His book, J.M.W. Turner and the Subject of History, was published by Ashgate Press in 2012 and was, as of the writing of this bio ranked #2,038,469 in Amazon sales. Dr. Costello has also contributed essays to the catalogs for numerous museum exhibitions including J.M.W. Turner, Tate Britain (2007), American Adversaries, (Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, 2013) Turner and the Sea, (National Maritime Museum, Greenwich, 2013-4. He also publishes on twentieth-century art, including an essay on Wyndham Lewis for the exhibition Nothing but the Clouds Unchanged (Getty 2014) and his essay on Alberto Giacometti and portraiture appeared in the journal October in the Winter 2015 issue. Dr. Costellos current book, Pictures of Nothing: Romantic Figurations of the Void, is concerned with Romantic depictions of nothingness, absence, void and immateriality within related theological, socio-political and aesthetic/literary discursive networks.
