Kathleen Flenniken - Washington State Poet Laureate
& Don't miss her POETRY WORKSHOP
Washington State Poet Laureate Kathleen Flenniken will share her poetry with the Methow Valley late this fall. Flenniken, who grew up in Richland and worked at the Hanford nuclear complex as a civil engineer and hydrologist, discovered poetry at the age of 32 during a series of night classes she took while raising her young children. She fell in love with it immediately, but initially kept her new passion hidden from her friends and family. "Poetry was my dirty secret," she admits, "but it became so much a part of who I am that I had to come out."
Flenniken's poetry spans themes that range from the domestic kitchen to the nuclear waste dump. Her first book, Famous (2006) received the Prairie Schooner Book Prize in Poetry and was named a Notable Book of the Year by the American Library Association. Plume (2012), her second collection of poetry, was selected for the Pacific Northwest Poetry Series. Flenniken holds an MFA from Rainier Writing Workshop and teaches poetry through Seattle's Writers in the Schools program, Jack Straw, and other arts agencies.
Washington's poet laureates all devote themselves specific projects during their tenure; Flenniken's focus is education, teaching poetry to elementary school students across the state. In late October, Flenniken will work with 3rd-5th graders in the six Okanogan County school districts served by Methow Arts. She has expressed that she enjoys that age group because students are learning to grasp the concept of metaphor.

On Friday, through a collaboration between Methow Arts Alliance and the Methow Conservancy, Flenniken will hold a Friday night presentation at the Merc Playhouse, with opening readings from local poets Abbie Miller and Patrick McGann.
