SPEAKER: Peter Thompson, Senior Technology Program Analyst - SANDAG
PROGRAM: "San Diego Autonomous Vehicle Proving Ground"
The U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT) designated the San Diego Association of Governments (SANDAG) as one of ten proving grounds for autonomous vehicles in the nation. SANDAG in partnership with the California Department of Transportation District 11 (Caltrans) and the City of Chula Vista, proposed three distinct autonomous vehicle proving ground environments: the barrier- separated Interstate 15 Express Lanes; a segment of the South Bay Expressway; and local streets and roads within the City of Chula Vista. Ten proving ground locations were selected across the nation based on broad criteria, including an ability to demonstrate safety planning, willingness to share and disseminate information, and an ability to show that all applicable laws, regulations, and policies will be met. The presentation will provide attendees with an overview of this designation, and seek ACEC member input at these early stages of preparation.
BIO: Peter is a Senior Transportation Technology Analyst within the Operations Department at SANDAG. He joined SANDAG in 2005 to deliver ITS projects across the entire multi-modal landscape. Recently, Peter's team was awarded both National- and State-based "...most innovative practice award" by ITS America and the California Transportation Commission for the I-15 Integrated Corridor Management (ICM) system. With the experience of using ICT to improve transportation efficiency, he and his colleagues now turn to the role connected and autonomous vehicles have in San Diego's future.
