A Great and Happy People
The history of womens rights in the United States cuts to the heart of what constitutes citizenship and civic life. Women have fought for the right to control their own lives, minds and bodies through the suffrage movement and the temperance movement, by cracking open the halls of Congress and the halls of universities, and in fighting for equal access and equal treatment. And over the centuries, relentless demands by women for the right to self-determination have transformed our legal and moral understanding of citizenship.
These are texts written and spoken by American women from a wide array of backgrounds that illustrate how the struggle for womens rights has always been a struggle for human rights.
