Looking + Drawing: Drawing from life and photographs
Each two hour class will begin with exercises designed to warm students minds and bodies to the present activity of drawing and looking.  Instruction in technique will be provided in order to increase students skills and awareness of perceptual drawing.  Skills developed will include: composition, structure in form and space, mark making and value building, material handling, and more.

Learning to draw includes not only the skillful rendering of what is perceived, but also the skillful awareness of ones own emotional, intellectual, cultural, and physical influences.  In this class we will attempt to develop a common set of skills and understandings of perception. Rendering by working from still life provides a neutral subject by which we practice observation.  Students will also be asked to provide photographs of subject matter that they are interested in engaging their imagination with.  By drawing from life, and from photos, students will recognize advantages and disadvantages in both types of reference material.

Along with a sense of curiosity, bravery, and enthusiasm for an activity that predates technology, students should bring 2 or 3 photos with them on the first day in order to initiate discussion.  Erik will bring examples of artists work to help communicate concepts, and provide hands on demonstrations when helpful.

This 6 week series will meet Tuesday evenings, April 11-May 16 from 6:30-8:30pm in the 2nd floor classroom at BIMA. As the art museum is closed at this time, please enter the building at the side door marked 100 Ravine Lane.

This course is taught by Bainbridge native Erik Peterson, who holds an MFA from American University.  Erik has taught drawing, painting, and color theory at schools ranging from Pratt Fine Art Center in Seattle to the Maryland College of Art and Design.

Materials needed:
1 Drawing Pad (11"x14" or larger); paper quality should be heavy enough to endure erasing and toothy enough to hold a little charcoal.

BIMA will provide all other materials and tools.
