Berachah Valley & Rum River Blend In Concert
Join us Saturday, April 29. 2017 at 8:00PM for one night only as Berachah Valley AND Rum River Blend take the stage at the Mayflower Arts Center to inspire, captivate, and engage the audience in a phenomenal evening of traditional bluegrass, folk, and gospel music.
Berachah Valley Berachah Valley was created in the spring of 2005 when a few friends came together searching for a place to play traditional bluegrass, gospel, and traditional renditions of current favorites. Audiences quickly see the result is a uniquely smooth combination of musicianship and female vocal harmonies influenced by the recordings of The Isaacs', The Forbes Family, Emmylou Harris, The Whites, and other various artists. Berachah is a biblical term meaning "blessing" and the band was inspired to derive its name from the Bible verse, II Chronicles 20:26. The players will testify that the clearly evident camaraderie seen on stage is the natural fruit of the great blessing of good friendships and shared faith.
Known for their powerful female trio harmony, Berachah Valley has had the good fortune to travel to Indiana, Tennessee, Michigan, Missouri, West Virginia, Kentucky, North Carolina and Ohio to perform at many bluegrass festivals, bluegrass and gospel venues, radio programs, TV programs, fairs and community events.
Cathy Baker plays rhythm guitar, sings lead and harmony and is one of the founding members, along with Michelle Edester who continues to blossom with her command of the mandolin. Michelle also provides consistent harmony and is very versatile vocally. Leisa Hinkle completes the vocal trio. Cathy, Michelle and Leisa take a sophisticated approach to harmony and together produce tight vocal harmonies for Bluegrass, Americana, Gospel, Country, Popular tunes and other genres. They are multi-talented vocalists, whose clear sounding, natural voices reach audience members time after time. Becky Meyers sings occasionally and shares her talent on the banjo and dojo. She plays well the many songs which former BV member Merrell Boggs has penned. Mike Elliott brings much musical experience from his years spent in Nashville, TN and generates much enthusiasm with his explosive lead guitar breaks and his command of the dobro. Mike is extremely diverse, plays many instruments exceptionally well. His experience in Bluegrass, Country, Gospel, Swing and Classical Music brings an outstanding element to Berachah Valley. On the bass is Larry Collins, who plays with much pathos with every movement and motion. During a performance, Larry seems to perceive complex themes, musical contour, and subtle nuances. His use of the bow during several songs is second to none. Larry along Mike bring versatility to Berachah Valley when they align themselves vocally for some outstanding male harmony. Rum River Blend Based in Troy, Ohio, Rum River Blend bill themselves as 'Unprofessional Entertainment'! The band takes its name from the Rum River that flows through Linda Tatarian's hometown of Milaca, Minnesota. They perform a blend of traditional bluegrass, folk, Gospel and children's songs. The audience is encouraged to join in on the fun as kazoos, spoons, washboards, and various other noise making instruments are often passed out to the crowd.
Linda Tatarian, the 'leader of the band' plays 5-string banjo and sings like a good Minnesotan should. Chris Tatarian plays rhythm guitar and sings back-up vocals in a California style that only he knows. Chris and Linda are the "roots" of Rum River Blend and have played together since 1992. After moving to Ohio in 2000, they have played with a variety of talented musicians. The bass beat for the band is provided by Mr. 'Smiling' Bill Benning, playing acoustic/electric bass guitar. Bill plays with a flair developed over time playing a wide variety of musical types with many different bands. Mr. Carl Phillis joins us on fiddle. Carl has years of professional musical experience, having played with most bands and orchestras in the area at one time or another. He is the 1948 Ohio State Fiddle Champion, and is a past professor of Bluegrass Fiddle Music at Sinclair College in Dayton. His fiddle playing brings a new level of energy and a host of new songs to the band. Carl will be celebrating his 95th birthday in July, 2017! Put 'em all together and the result is music that makes you want to tap your foot and sing along! For more info about RRB, visit www.rumriverblend.com.
