Japanese American Incarceration, Farming, and Pike Place Market
On March 4th at 11 AM at Pike Place Market in the Atrium (top floor), Slow Food Seattle will host an event about local Japanese American farmers, and how Roosevelt's Executive Order 9066 and ensuing incarceration of Japanese Americans hurt our local farming community at the time. The subject sadly carries special relevance now under the new presidential administration.

We will have a panel of speakers gathered to discuss this historical event, and will discuss lessons we can apply today.

Our speakers will include:
- Dave Neiwert, investigative journalist and author of Strawberry Days: How Internment Destroyed a Japanese American Community
- Ed Suguro, whose family had a farm in Bellevue before the war -- they were removed to the internment camp in Tule Lake, Utah.
- Tyler George-Minetti, New Roots Coordinator with the International Rescue Committee
- Representative from Pike Place Market, where nearly 80% of its vendors were Japanese Americans at the time of the internment
- Moderated by Mei Yook Woo, Founder, The Foodways Project and Manager, Danny Woo Community Garden

This event is free, although we suggest a $5 contribution for the Pike Place Market Foundation, which has generously supported Slow Food Seattle for this event, and in the past.

We hope you will join us!

Directions to the event:

Finding the Atrium Suite from the Public Market Center "Clock" Sign:
Enter the Market at First & Pike and follow the sidewalk straight back to Rachel the Piggybank. If you stand next to Rachel the Piggy Bank, under the Clock Sign, and face Pike Place Fish (the corner of Pike Street & Pike Place), there is an upward staircase on your left next to Sunny Honey Company. When you reach the top of the stairs, the Atrium Suite (Atrium Loft, Elliott Bay Room, Salish Room) is to the right and the Goodwin Library is to the left. The Atrium floor is visible from the mezzanine and accessible by the elevator.

Finding the Atrium Suite from First Avenue & Pike Street:
From First Avenue & Pike Street, between DeLaurenti's and the newsstand, walk inside the Arcade (Economy Market Entrance) away from 1st Ave. There is a hallway on the left just past DeLaurenti's, opposite Seattle Bagel Bakery. The Atrium floor is just through the hallway to the left. To get to the Atrium Loft, take the elevator to the 3rd Floor. When you step off the elevator, the Atrium Suite (Atrium Loft, Elliott Bay Room, Salish Room) will be on the left and the Goodwin Library to the right. *Only accessible between 8:00am and 6:00pm.
