Reading as Reading the Room: A Great Love Signature Series Class led by Maggie Schein
A GREAT LOVE SIGNATURE SERIES CLASS
Reading as Reading the Room
Instructor: Maggie Schein
RESCHEDULED -- 3:00 to 4:30 pm on Fridays, March 17, March 24, and April 7
Limited to 12 participants
Fee includes all 3 sessions)

This series of three 90-minute workshops approaches the immersive act of reading as a vehicle of self-reflection and empathy as well as textual analysis and enjoyment of story. Participants will be guided through an active and interactive approach to close readings of three short stories, engaging with the texts and with one another for a deeper appreciation of both as we seek the inspiration and revelation only great stories can provide. The workshop readings will be Annie Dillard's "The Wreck of Time," Primo Levi's "Force Majeur," and J.M. Coetzee's "The Lives of Animals." Reading in advance of each workshops is required.

Advance registration required. Workshop registration fees are non-refundable, but if you must cancel, the fee can be applied toward a future Conroy Center class or event.

About our instructor: A native of Atlanta, and now a resident of the South Carolina lowcountry, Maggie Schein was raised on stories. Schein holds a Ph.D. in ethics from the University of Chicago's Committee on Social Thought. An admirer of Taoist and Buddhist texts, philosophies, and practices, as well as the works of naturalists and Native American storytellers, Schein brings a wealth of complementary and conflicting perspectives to her imaginative, lyrical fiction. She lives in Beaufort with her motley menagerie of rescued animals and artist Jonathan Hannah. A collection of fables, Lost Cantos of the Ouroboros Caves is Schein's first book. The expanded edition published by USC Press's Story River Books includes illustrations by Jonathan Hannah and, with the limited edition hardcover, select stories narrated by two-time Grammy winner Janis Ian and a foreword written and narrated by Pat Conroy.
